John Smit:

“They played a really quick game tonight which is similar to how they have played for a long time. But if you tackle all night you cannot expect to win it. In the past we were able to put more pressure on them defensively, tonight we let them slip through.

“The All Blacks were really good tonight. There was nothing going on from our side. The lights were out. They wanted it more, were more urgent and deserve what they got. We didn’t really give them much of a contest today but we’ll be back.

“The sin-binning was very silly. Discipline wins and loses you Tests. We’ve got lots to work on and we certainly didn’t arrive today.

“We built last year’s Tri-Nations triumph on pressure, but this time they were dominated by the All Blacks in all facets of play. The All Blacks were better at the set-piece and in the physical exchanges, and the Springbok defence was worryingly brittle.

“In the past we’ve been able to put more pressure on them defensively and today we let them slip through. When you get that quick ball it’s hard to stop.”
