Son of former Springbok fullback Gysie, it was at fullback that Ruan made his debut for the Springboks against the All Blacks last year (earning five Test caps – three in the Tri- Nations), despite playing his rugby almost exclusively at scrumhalf. Such is his all round ability, he has also played at flyhalf (playing in this position in South Africa’s IRB World Championship Title win in 2005), and been a first choice place-kicker for the Sharks.
